Oil tankers are ships designed to transport crude oil or petroleum products. They are equipped with a pumping system that enables them to load and unload crude oil. Oil tankers are an alternative to pipelines for transporting oil from the rigs to the ports for their onward travel from there to the refineries.
An average sized oil tanker can carry on average 735,294 barrels. Each barrels of crude oil or petroleum is approximately 159 litres.

The term laid-up ships means ships, which are temporarily idle due to lack of cargo or which are temporarily phased out of commercial operations. Ships are laid-up when freight rates are not sufficient to cover the running costs. During times of economical crisis laying-up is often preferred to the sale of the ship.
Lay-ups for ships are 2 types : Hot & Cold
During “hot laying up“ a ship is idle, but can be brought back into service at short notice. “Cold laying up“ means that the ship is taken out of service due to lack of employment and is moored or anchored at a safe place waiting for new employment.
Ships like oil tankers and gas carriers carry huge amount of cargo in bulk which does not have to be unloaded in just one port but at different ports. Even some carriers like VLCC and ULCC which are massive in size does not berth in port or jetty for discharge operation due to draught restrictions. In such condition ship to ship transfer is utilised.
